Quotes from "A River Runs Through It"

1."My father was very sure about certain matters pertaining to the universe.  To him, all good things-trout    as well as eternal salvation-come by grace and grace comes by art and art does not come easy."

Why does his father think that eternal salvation came by grace and grace came by art?  Why does he think like that about things pertaining to the universe?

His father thinks like that because he  is a Presbyterian minister that is very into fly fishing.  Fly fishing to those who know it most has an art to it, so therefore he beleives most things pertaining to the universe eventually come from art.

2."Poets talk about "spots of time'" but it is really fishermen who experience eternity compressed into a moment. No one can tell what a spot of time is until suddenly the whole world is a fish and the fish is gone. I shall remember that son a bitch forever."

What do you think he means by this?  What is he trying to tell us by saying this.

I believe that  he means that there is a spot of time for everyone but you don't realize what it is until it's gone.

3."One of life's quiet excitements is to stand somewhat apart from yourself and watch yourself softly becoming the author of something beautiful, even if it is only a floating ash."

What is being said here?  Who is he talking about?

He is talking about himself because he is talking about seeing things about yourself.  I think he is saying that you get excitement from seeing yourself grow, even if you don't notice it at first or even if it's something simple.

4."Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters."

Is what he is saying make sense?  Did he make a good point? What do you think he is saying in this quote?

What he is saying makes sense, even to someone that does'nt fish and does'nt know much about rivers and such.  He made a very good point and what I thought he ment by it is that our life is "it" and a river runs through "it".
